Hawaii retailers often celebrate the new year on Jan. 1 with the Japanese fukubukuro tradition of “lucky bags” filled with discounted merchandise.
The catch? You won’t know what’s in them until after you purchase them.
Among those offering the lucky bags this year are T Galleria by DFS and Pualeilani Atrium Shops at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa.
At T Galleria, participants include fashion brands Burberry, Coach, Emporio Armani, Ermenegildo Zegna, Furla, Fossil, Hugo Boss, Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren, Salvatore Ferragamo, Longchamp, MCM, Paul Smith, Rebecca Minkoff, Tod’s, Tory Burch, Vivienne Westwood, plus fashion watch and sunglass departments. Beauty brands include Anna Sui, Bobbi Brown, Clarins, Clinique, Estee Lauder, Givenchy, and 3CE.
The store will open at 8 a.m. on New Year’s Day, and quantities of lucky bags are limited. Other deals will be available through 11 p.m., starting with a new year otoshidama gift of a $20 DFS gift certificate for the first 500 customers. No purchase is necessary but individuals must be 18 years old or older, and only one gift certificate will be given per person.
The first 200 shoppers will be able to enjoy free malasadas and coffee as a new year treat, in the second floor beauty area.
Shoppers may also enter for a chance to win up to a $1,000 DFS gift certificate in a lucky drawing taking place the same day. Two winners of $250 in gift certificates and one winner for $500 in gift certificates will be chosen at 10 a.m., noon, and 2, 4, and 6 p.m. Three winners will be chosen to receive $1,000 in gift certificates at 8 p.m. No purchase is necessary but individuals must be 18 years old or older, and must be present at the drawing to win.
Those who spend $500 or more at T Galleria by DFS between Dec. 29 and Jan. 4, 2018, will receive a $50 DFS gift certificate (some brand exclusions apply).
T Galleria by DFS is at 330 Royal Hawaiian Ave.
