Touch, smell, taste nature in Beijing

Four Seasons Hotel Beijing has created “Our Nature,” an initiative bringing nature into the Hotel to reconnect guests—who often live in congested, concrete urban spaces—to this most essential part of life.

Our Nature began over the holidays with “Nature & Beauty,” an afternoon of health in the Tea Garden, where guests were able to try the Opulence Collection of organic beauty treatments from Intraceuticals, learned about healthy diets with assistance executive chef Sandeep Bhagwat, and tasted delicacies of fresh ingredients cooked up by the chef.

Drawing on natural themes from Beijing and its surroundings, Four Seasons Hotel Beijing curates floral displays and programming to highlight seasonal themes and resources. Guest activities include organic farm tours, floral arrangement workshops, unique chef’s table events, and spa experiences utilizing all-natural products.

“Our florists are artists, and fresh flowers and plants bring a sense of warmth into the Hotel,” said the hotel’s general manager Andrew De Brito, in a release introducing the initiative. “We tend to take nature for granted, but we wanted to reconnect people in the city with nature and bring nature into the Hotel to touch, smell and even eat.”

Nature Curator Ryan Carter is an American who hails from a family of farmers in Virginia that traces its roots back more than 400 years. After studying classical Greek and Latin and architecture at the University of Virginia, he unearthed ancient Greek artifacts in Sicily and Cyprus, before returning to his childhood passion for botany, creating terraria and small balcony gardens.

Carter looks beyond simple beauty in his work. “Beauty is a cornerstone of what we aim to provide, of course, but our installations aim to connect with the environment, raise questions and conversation, and inspire our guests to discover more.”
